On the 25th of April 2024 in Lagos, Nigeria, the Basel Convention Coordinating Cnetre for the African Region (BCCC-Africa) organized the Project Validation/Closing Workshop of the "Promoting the Environmentally Sound Management and Control of transboundary trade of Plastic Waste in Nigeria through Inventory and Stakeholder Mapping" Project.
The project was designed to provide reliable inventory data on local plastic waste generation rates, and plastic waste trade (import/export), for the enhancement of ESM and control of transboundary movement of plastic waste. The project also established a database of local stakeholders involved in the plastic waste value chain in Nigeria.
The plastic waste inventory data collected was analyzed using an innovative Plastic Waste Inventory Toolkit which helped identify the prevalent leakage pathways through which plastic waste enters into the environment.

Funding for the project was provided by Norwegian Agency for Development Cooperation (Norad) under the Small Grants Programme on Plastic Waste of the Secretariat of the Basel, Rotterdam and Stockholm (BRS) Conventions.
