On the 19th of December 2023, BCCC-Africa was in Lagos, to host the inception workshop of the Life Cycle Assessment of Selected Plastic Products/Wastes in Nigeria (A pilot project of the Basel Convention Plastic Waste Partnership).

The objective of this project is to identify the most prevalent, and problematic types of
plastic waste in Nigeria, and carry out comprehensive life cycle assessments of selected four
of these plastic products and their wastes. The assessment will determine the overall
environmental impacts of these products and provide information and appropriate
recommendations that will guide and support the environmentally sound prevention and
reduction of these plastic wastes. The products/wastes that are envisaged for consideration

will include, but not limited to PE water sachet packages, PET bottles for water and

The objectives of the workshop were to:
• Raise awareness among stakeholders on the significance of LCA.
• Introduce the LCA project to invited stakeholders.
• Present results of the work done so far by the Project Technical Committee (PTC) and
Project Steering Committee (PSC).
• Receive feedback and input from stakeholders.
• Discuss next steps in collaboration with stakeholders.

The workshop was attended by relevant stakeholders in the plastic waste management value
chain, which included:
• Regulators Recyclers
• NGOs
• Private Sector
• PROs
• Academia
