The Secretariat of the Basel, Rotterdam and Stockholm (BRS) conventions, and the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC), with support from the Basel Convention Coordinating Centre for Capacity Building and Technology Transfer for the African Region (BCCC-Nigeria), organized a regional training activity between the 17-18 of November 2022 at tSouthern Sun Hotel, Ikoyi, Lagos, to strengthen the capacity of States Parties in West Africa to implement the Basel, Rotterdam and Stockholm Conventions as well as the United Nations Convention against

Transnational Organized Crime in combating waste trafficking. The training focused on national legal and institutional frameworks to implement the Conventions, as well as enforcement, prevention and combating of illegal traffic and trade in hazardous chemicals and wastes. The workshop was funded by the European Union and the Government of Germany.

The workshop was attended by 41 participants, with 1 participant participating remotely.
Participation was drawn from 5 English-speaking Countries in West-Africa (Ghana, Gambia, Liberia, Nigeria and Sierra Leone).

• The participants included designated contacts of the Parties to the BRS Conventions (official contact points, focal points, designated national authorities, national focal points and competent authorities)
• Customs and other enforcement officials responsible for trade control of movements of hazardous chemicals and wastes
• Prosecutors and criminal justice practitioners involved in prosecuting waste trafficking cases
• Policy makers involved in the development, drafting and updating of legislation and other measures.
• Also attending the workshop were staff of the BRS Secretariat, UNODC (Nigeria), UNODC (Vienna), BCCC-Nigeria, FAO and WCO
