INAUGURATION AND TECHNICAL MEETING OF THE STEERING COMMITTEE OF THE BASEL CONVENTION COORDINATING CENTRE FOR TRAINING AND TECHNOLOGY TRANSFER FOR THE AFRICAN REGION (BCCC-AFRICA).
This was organized by BCCC-Africa in collaboration with the Federal Ministry of Environment and the Secretariat of the Basel Convention on 06 March, 2012, in Abuja, Nigeria.
The inauguration was attended by over fifty participants; including the Honourable Minister of Environment, Hajia Mrs Hadiza Ibrahim Mailafia, ably represented by the Permanent Secretary Alhaji Mohammed Sambo Bashar, mni. Representatives from Federal Ministries of Foreign Affairs and Justice; Government Parastatals and Agencies; the National Envi ronmental Standards and Regulations Enforcement Agency (NESREA), Basel Convention Coordinating Centre for Africa (BCCC-Africa), Secretariat of the Basel Convention, European Union, UNIDO, ECOWAS Commission, POPs Environmental Consulting, the Academia and the Media.
The objective of the meeting was to; establish a Steering Committee to advise the Regional Coordinating Centre on the development and implementation of its activities; review and adoption of the proposed business plan of the BCCC-A for 2012 - 2013, including proposed budget and financial/resource mobilization.
The first Steering Committee meeting was attended by Dr. Katharina Kummer Peiry, immediatepast Executive Secretary , Secretariat of Basel Convention; who represented the new Executive Secretary of the Joint Secretariat of Basel, Rotterdam and Stockholm Conventions of UNEP, Mr Jim Willis; Olufunke O. Babade (Mrs.), Federal Ministry of Environment, Nigeria; Representatives of Federal Ministry of Justice, Nigeria; Federal Ministry, Environment, Nigeria; Dr. Maren Melle-dorf, of UNIDO, Stockholm Convention Unit, Vienna, Austria; A.O. Ajani, UNIDO Regional Office, Nigeria; Massimo De Luca, Delegation of the European Union to Nigeria; Roland Weber, POPs Environmental Consulting, Goppihgh, Germany; Dr. O.O. Dada, Environmental Consultant, Nigeria; and Prof. Oladele Osibanjo, Director BCCC-Africa.The major objective of the technical meeting was to consider and adopt the Business Plan of the BCCC-Africa.
